Life in Boarding School
By Henry Omofonwan

My right slipper handed in the middle of a pothole filled with mud. 'I guess the raining season is finally here' i thought. I took off my slipper and hoped it dries up by the time i got home. I was worried, i have been thinking about being enrolling in a boarding school for the first time in my life. I could feel my temperature rise and my heart beat faster as I got walked home.
'Henry where have you been?' A voiced inquired from behind, it was my dad. My dad hails from Edo state, he is muscular but has a 'soft spot' for his children. He is a very strict  man. He easily get irritated by unseriousness and laziness. He is what we call a disciplinarian!
'Oh dad its you', i replied. 'You haven't answered my question, where have you been?', he asked again almost frowning. I felt an urgent urge to answer, 'mom sent me to the electrician down the road', i replied. 'What is the problem again?', he asked. 'The wall socket in the kitchen is faulty' I replied immediately. Out of the blue he asked a question that have been bothering my mind, 'are you sure you want to go a boarding school?' I was dumbfounded, without thinking properly i replied in the affirmative.

At first, i didn't want to attend a boarding school but since almost all my friends are going to a boarding school, I had to follow the 'norm'. 'Henry can you make me some custard? My sister's voice brought me to the present reality. 'Can my life not get any worst' i growled at the top of my voice.

The d-day finally arrived. The day i am to enroll in a boarding school. What scare me the most was that it was a military boarding school! 'Men, how am i going to cope', i whispered to myself. The nervousness in my voice was alarming. 'Henry sweetie, is everything alright?', my mom asked. 'Yes mom', i answered rather absent mindedly.

We finally arrived at Ogun state. We didn't go directly to the school but we were hunting for a comfortable hostel close to the school premises. Finally, we saw Leaders Hostel. It had a signpost with the words 'home away from home'. It was painted green, a three storey building with lots of rooms. Its big!' I said. My dad settled the accommodation fee and other miscellaneous expenses.

'What is your name boy? The hostel manager asked with a friendly tone. 'My name is Henry sir', i answered sheepishly. He continued, 'Henry welcome to the jungle, this is a place where the strongest survives. It is survival of the fittest. I don't mean to scare you, but its the raw truth' immediately my body was filled with goose pimples. Suddenly, a boy came over to where I was standing, he said with a thick strong voice 'o boy give me that watch way dey your hand'. I was surprise and astonished as it was mine. 'It is mine' i replied confidently. He tried to take the watch from me forcefully when my mom and dad walked in. Mom saw him trying to bully me and yelled, 'will you let him be? What is your problem?' The boy looked at me and said 'i will deal with you!' He ran away as my mom came closer. I cant believe i have just made an enemy on the first day at Leaders Hostel.
