5 English Expressions you misunderstood
By

Nigerians don't understand the following expressions:
1. Break a leg! It is not a reinforcement for you to start a fight , rather it's a phrase for bidding someone goodluck
2.something has seen better days. This doesn't mean that the thing being talked about is good. It's just a way of saying the thing is totally worn out. A ramshackle car has definitely seen better days. Something that is old has really seen better days. His boxers has definitely seen better days...'grins from ear to war's
3.knock yourself out This is not a derogatory term. It doesn't mean you should go and hang yourself or 'keel over'. It could either mean the person who says it is telling you to do as you really please, enjoy yourself or the person is giving you the permission to do something.e.g here are some sweets. You can knock yourself out with them. Me: mum I would like to attend my friend's party Mum: knock yourself out.
4. I couldn't agree more This statement usually makes some people pick up a fight with someone who is a proponent of their ideology. At that point, you are just showing everyone how ignorant you are of the phrase. The phrase means that you totally agree.
5. Conclusively This word does not mean 'in conclusion' rather it means 'without a doubt'. E.g Conclusively , her performance is the best. What Britons call 'Sweets', Americans call 'candies' Based on what one of my students on KIA, had told me, I.have decided to share an article on how I trained myself to speak clearly with the RP. How I learnt English properly even though I had an Anambra accent. Many people think their accents cannot be changed for them to achieve a clear way of enunciation. Some people ask questions like 'why is it vital to learn to learn to say words better?' . I always ask them ,' why is it vital for you to learn beautiful words and write beautifully well?' If you find fault in people who wishes to speak clearly and very articulately but then you wish to write a book that can be clearly understood by English speakers, then, you are the quintessential example of a kettle calling pot black.
